Cost Per Canadian for February 16th
The threats of tariffs will continue until morale improves.

Presented by Point Blank
We missed last week and almost missed this week, too, but I’m sneaking in a Sunday edition of Cost Per Canadian to update you on the spending in Ontario for the provincial election, the candidates' positions in the Liberal leadership race, and the state of the nation as we count down to a suddenly much more uncertain federal election.
Have a wonderful Family Day long weekend.

A new ad from the Conservative Party of Canada attacking Mark Carney. Source.
The Conservative Party of Canada has cast its vote for the leader of the Liberal Party. The Conservatives are wasting no time attempting to define Carney before he or anyone else steps onto the stage as the elected leader of the Liberal Party.
Rather than engaging with, say, the record of their own leader or the policies they plan to pitch in the next election, they’re back to their greatest hits: linking any and all Liberals to Trudeau, throwing "carbon tax" into every sentence, and hoping that enough repetition will do the job.
This approach tells us something important: Conservatives aren’t just predicting Carney’s candidacy; they’re banking on it. The attack ad spend at this stage is about more than just softening him up—it’s about shaping the ballot question before voters even have a chance to consider the alternatives. The playbook is clear: tie the next Liberal leader as closely to Trudeau as possible and hope that voter fatigue does the rest.
